RockTape: Not just for athletes

RockTape: Not just for athletes

RockTape is a brand of kinesiology tape. Since the Beijing games in 2008 athletes have moved away from using the rigid zinc oxide style taping opting for the durable colourful kinesiology tape instead. This is not only because it looks much nicer, but also because it is a more functional product. Traditional zinc oxide taping does not allow movement or have any stretch. Whilst this may be desirable for some injuries, the majority of injuries don’t require this rigidity and this is where the flexibility of kinesiology tape comes into its own. Kinesiology tape was originally developed in the 1970s by Dr Kenzo Kase from Japan. It provides support to injured muscles and joints, but because of the elasticity, it gives a greater range of movement, allowing athletes to continue training and go about their daily activities.

The benefits of RockTape are not only for athletes, the benefits of this fantastic tape, can be used in our everyday lives. We will discuss this in more detail later, first let’s find out how the tape works.

How it works

When RockTape is applied on the skin it creates a lifting effect, decompressing the subcutaneous layers beneath the tape. There are three proposed mechanisms, by which Rocktape can influence the body:

Fluid effect – improved fluid flow by reducing compression of vascular (e.g. veins) and lymphatic vessels

Mechanical effect – decompression of soft tissue layers to allows better glide between tissue layers (e.g. muscle and fascia)

Neurological effect – decreased pain and improved body awareness.

Here is a diagram of how RockTape affects the skin before and after application.

What is RockTape used for?

RockTape is typically used to:

  • Reduce Pain
  • Improve pain free function
  • Increase pain free range of motion
  • Optimise recovery
  • Improve postural awareness
  • Increase proprioception (Body Awareness)
  • Improve muscular function
  • Improve movement
  • Improve flexibility
  • Reduce imbalance
  • Delay muscle fatigue
  • Improve athletic performance

With this huge list of potential benefits you can see how RockTape can be applied to a wide range of people, not just athletes.

Alternative uses of RockTape

When we talk about RockTape we think about being applied to help posture, knee injuries or a shoulder problem mainly within the sport setting. RockTape is a hugely versatile piece of kit, which can be used for so much. Here are some different uses for RockTape, which you may not considered.

As far as pregnancy goes, kinesiology tape is a safe and effective treatment option. Musculoskeletal pain is common in pregnancy, especially low back and pelvic girdle pain, as well as ligament pain (that quick jabbing pain felt in the lower abdomen or groin area – ouch!)

Kinesiology tape is a drug-free, safe alternative, which can help relieve many pregnancy symptoms including back pain, swollen feet, sciatica, carpal tunnel, and other aches and pains. Because of this, it is an ideal option for expectant mothers seeking relief from the ailments associated with pregnancy.

By adding a few strategic strips of the colourful tape to either the back or abdomen, some of the common postural aches and pains that are associated with a growing baby bump can be alleviated. It helps to distribute the weight of the extra pounds evenly with the tapes around. It can immensely reduce fatigue too.

Colds/Sinus Problems

The build-up of pressure when we suffer from sinus problems, infections and colds can make life pure hell. Using RockTape can help alleviate the pressure in your head by lifting the skin and allowing blood flow and drainage of the tissues. Pre-warning you might look a bit odd, but from personal experience, it is worth it. Headaches and congestion are eased within minutes, allowing you to go about your day, not being stuck in bed, feeling sorry for yourself. This same taping method can help snoring too, an extra bonus! Lymphedema associated with Breast Cancer

Breast cancer treatments continue to improve, but even still, many patients must deal with difficult side effects and long-lasting consequences of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and other treatments.

One of those potential ill effects is lymphedema, a condition in which one or more areas of the body experience swelling due to their decreased ability to move lymph fluid and flush it out of the body. Lymphedema often occurs when lymph nodes are removed during surgery or damaged during radiation therapy.

Sadly, lymphedema is not curable, however, there are several treatment options that can help reduce swelling and ensure patients are able to maintain a high quality of life.

RockTape, can help reduce swelling, it works by gently lifting the skin and providing negative pressure to specific areas in a particular pattern to encourage the fluid to go toward a lymph node and be drained from the body.
